A Koi pond filter is the key in the effectiveness of a pond filtration system. Through the filter, the dirt and debris present in the pond water are removed thoroughly. There are many types of filters for a Koi fish pond and in choosing one you must consider the filter’s durability and effectiveness in filtering dirty pond water. But is it really important to have a Koi pond filter for a Koi garden? To help you understand the importance of a pond filter for a Koi fish pond, here are few important facts about it:

The primary purpose of a pond filter is to remove the tiny wastes present in the pond water. It works by trapping debris through the fine mesh of the filter.

Filters are very essential for man-made ponds. It will remove waste products, algae, leaves, nitrates, ammonia and other waste materials that can be toxic for Koi fishes.

Some kinds of pond filters also serve as converters. It works by processing the ammonia present in the pond water and converts it into a less harmful form of chemical compound.

In choosing a Koi pond filter, the filter’s size is very important to consider. A small filter installed in a big pond will make the filter useless, so in buying one you must also consider the size of your pond. If you are uncertain about choosing the appropriate size of filter for your Koi pond, you can ask for the advice of Koi experts. You can also ask from shop-owners selling Koi pond supplies; just tell the dimensions of your pond and they will give you an appropriately sized filter for it.

Don’t consider the filter’s price in choosing one. Cheap pond filters tend to filter wastes less effectively and each one lasts for a short period of time only.

So how could you correctly choose the size of a pond filter all by yourself? Just assess if the filter can accommodate at least 1/3 of the total size of your Koi fish pond. You can determine that fact by reading the specifications of your preferred pond filter as the total capacity of the filter is always stated in its specifications. You must also know the dimensions of your Koi pond so you can compare it with the filter’s capacity.

Once the filter has been successfully installed to your pond, make sure to check it once in a while to know if it works properly or if it needs a replacement already.

Purchasing The Right Kind Of Koi Pond Supply You Want Online

The earliest account of Japanese gardens is found in the Nihon-shoki (Chronicles of Japan) written in the eighth century C.E. There we are told about a bridge and the representation of a mountain made in the southern court of the palace of Empress Suiko in the year 612.

This seems to have been one of the first steps toward the development of landscape gardening as we know it today. Later, from 1185 until the restoration of Emperor Meiji in 1868, the country was under the rule of successive shoguns, or war lords. These men, though fighting bitter battles with one another, took great interest in landscape gardening.

In some gardens the ponds and streams were enlarged to such an extent that the guests could enjoy a boat ride and admire the scenery from various vantage points. Some of these splendid gardens remain to the present day.

One striking example is the garden of the famous Kinkaku-ji, or Golden Pavilion, in Kyoto. This was built in 1397 by Yoshimitsu, third shogun of the Ashikaga family. Though the pavilion was destroyed by fire in 1950, it has since been restored.

The pond and surrounding garden are reminders of the splendor enjoyed by the then-existing ruling class. One reason for the permanence of these old Japanese gardens is the use of rocks, sand and stone ornaments. Trees grow old, bamboo fences and thatched roofs decay, but the rocks remain in the form of stone bridges, lanterns, water basins and stepping-stones along the paths leading to the teahouse.

Yes, ponds are among the most remarkable elements in Japanese gardens and are now even influencing a large population of garden enthusiasts today.

Maintaining Your Own Koi Pond

If you are among the owners of koi pond gardens, it is important that you know how to take good care of this wonderful natural display of beauty through choosing the right koi pond supply that best fits your own garden pond. Kois particularly are the ones that are in need of primary care.

Getting the right kind of koi pond supply from responsible dealers is essential for maintaining a pond and keeping the koi fishes alive and enthusiastic for swimming. With the utilization of the Internet connections most prominent in the market today, it is essential that owners of koi ponds give consideration to choosing koi pond supply providers posted through the internet for their own conveniences.

The earliest account of Japanese gardens is found in the Nihon-shoki (Chronicles of Japan) written in the eighth century C.E. There we are told about a bridge and the representation of a mountain made in the southern court of the palace of Empress Suiko in the year 612.

One of the most vital investments for your Koi pond is a water filtration system. The Koi species is unusually perceptive of the quality of its water, and many fish have been known to lose the vibrancy of their colors if the water is not maintained under strict conditions. The most common pollutant found in Koi ponds is ammonia, which is present in Koi waste. Because Koi have no stomachs to hold food, anything that you give them will pass right through to the other end, so a proper diet is also helpful in maintaining a healthy living environment. For the rest, a Koi filter will do the job.

Since no one wants to clean their fish pond every day, a purifying filter is a necessity for almost all Koi owners. Keeping your fish healthy and beautiful means providing them with clean, nutritive water. Most owners will want biological filters, which utilize two bacteria in their cleaning process. The first is known as Nitrosomonas, which converts the toxic ammonia from Koi waste into the less toxic nitrites, and the second is Nitrobacter, which converts the nitrites then into nitrates, resulting in non-toxic, environmentally safe compounds. These types of Koi filters are especially useful in small ponds, with a small fish population. In larger or more populated ponds, biological filters tend to be less efficient, since larger amounts of sediment will require frequent cleaning in order for the Koi filter to work properly.

Image via Wikipedia

Owners of large Koi ponds are likely to find that a mechanical filter may be more useful to them. These tend to do a much better job of cleaning pests, insects, and algae, but a drain must be installed in the bottom of the pond to collect waste, which may lead to a more expensive installation.

Another useful item you may want to consider is a pump to create a flow of water in the pond to help gather sediment. Buying a pump is a good idea for several other reasons, such as dispersing nutrients and oxygen evenly throughout the water.

After your installation is complete it is very important to test the water for chemicals and wastes to know if your Koi filter is working properly. Testing the water is the only way to know the quality of your pond water, and it is a task that should be done weekly. Always remember that your Koi are much more sensitive to the quality of water than you are.

Now on to what I know you’re wondering: just how much money is all this going cost? Well, a filter for a 250 gallon Koi pond will usually range from $160-$200; a 1000 gallon Koi pond is $300-$400; and a 2000 gallon Koi pond filter typically goes for $500-$600. A water pump, if needed, costs $350, and the water testing kits can be bought for $7 at any pet store.

Of course you want to have the perfect koi fish pond so you need to be informed of what is really necessary to achieve it. The following posts will inform you exactly how to build and keep the koi pond sparkling.

Koi fish Pond Pump:

To link a pump to your filtration system there are a few things you have to keep in mind:

The pump and the filter must be compatible

The volume of water determines the capacity of the pump

The type of pump depends on the use you are going to give it: permanently working or not. If you are using a biological filter than you should get a non-stop pump

Decide whether you want a electric pump or a solar power one. Solar ones are used mostly for fountains and small ponds.

Here are some examples of koi pond pumps you can buy:

On my previous post Koi pond supplies I mentioned some essential products and now I am going to tell two more:

Pond Salt and Baking Soda – Pond salt and baking soda are used to regulate kH and Nitrate levels in case you notice a discrepancy. Pay close attention to the amounts you are suppose to add to your pond, which depends on size and the problems you are currently having.

Bags – In order to transport your Koi fish you should have appropriate bags on hand. Do not try to transport your Koi in trash or regular plastic bags, once they are not designed for this, and may cause damage to your Koi fish. Make sure to get bags sizable enough to hold your Koi.

I will be posting more Koi fish pond supplies very soon.

A Koi fish pond produces a lot of organic debris and muck. Sum up with the stuff that falls in the water (leaves, insects, dust, etc.) we can say that a Koi pond can be very dirty. So, what can we do to keep good quality water?

Koi pond skimmers are the right solution to trap the rubbish on the surface before it sinks. If the filtration system is working properly and the water is returning from the filtration system to the pond then, at some stage, the surface debris will for certain pass through the mouth of the skimmer. In a rectangular Koi fish pond it is best to return water to one end and to skim the surface at the other.

Water overflows make ideal surface skimmers, if you want to add this as a feature to your pond. Bear in mind though that the pond water level then becomes important and needs to be maintained at a relatively consistent level or else your filtration system and flow rates will tend to vary somewhat.

A great idea for Koi pond skimmers is to have them built into the Koi pond right next to the settlement chamber. That way the skimmer will clean to surface of the pond water right into the settlement chamber, from where all the collected debris can be accumulated and filtered out of the pond system.

If you live in an area where the amount of leaves falling is very big you should use a conventional pool skimmer to remove the leaves. This way you don’t load the filter system and we keep our Koi fish pond with quality water.
