Before you decide as to what pump installation to use for your Koi pond, there are certain things to consider on finding one.

The Pump
With the external pond pump, this should be installed on the outside of the pump and below the level of the pond’s surface. This is to make sure that the pump works well and to ensure that it would collect the needed amount of water so as to make it purposeful. While on the other hand, when you are using a submersible pump, this is placed inside the pond and on the lowest part of the flooring in order to collect all the dirt in the pond. This is good but it has a tendency to break because it is made of sealants to protect from the water to get inside the electric wiring of the pump. When this happens, there is a higher risk for your fishes because they would lack the oxygen that they get from the surface of the water because of the oil coolants that the breakage released.

Air Pump
It is really a necessity for your pond to have an air pump installed. Aside from making your pond more beautiful, it will help in the circulation of oxygen in your pond making it a more conducive place to live.

Pond Drains
This pond drains are mostly located on the lowest part of the floor of the pond and is collecting all the dirt and debris located four feet around it. This makes cleaning easier and not time consuming.

Skimmer
Skimmers are used to collect debris from falling leaves near the pond and others. This will take you less time cleaning your pond for dry leaves and the likes. Skimmers are installed far from the incoming water from the filter so that the incoming water will push the debris to the skimmer for trapping. This can be installed alone or with the filter and the aerator.

It is every Koi fish owner’s dream to have healthy Koi swimming in crystal clear water. But how to do that has always been a challenge. There are a few pieces of equipment that will help you in your quest for that elusive perfectly clear water.

The ozone unit is one piece of equipment that you could consider. Aquarium owners have used ozone for some time but it is relatively new to Koi ponds probably because they are very expensive. The ozone is created by passing air through a high voltage electrical discharge. This adds an extra atom to the oxygen. When this is detached it creates a very powerful disinfectant process.

Image via Wikipedia

The ozone itself can never be let into the pond. It is very harmful to the fish. But the water is fed through the ozone unit where it is treated before it is returned to the pond. Once treated it is free of bacteria and parasites and has improved clarity.

Another option for improving water quality and clarity is the UV clarifier. These units help to keep the water clear of single-celled algae that flourishes in sunlight and high levels of nitrates and phosphates. The UV clarifier radiates ultraviolet light causing the algae to collapse and decay. This unit is not a UV sterilizer that is commonly used in aquariums.

This unit is also different from the UV sterilizer that is often used in aquariums. The clarifier allows a higher volume of water to pass over the ultraviolet light. The sterilizer lets less water pass closer to the light for a higher dose.

You can add a variety of “water polishing” units to your filtration system to greatly improve the water quality. This has commonly been accomplished by passing the water through a sand filter as the last stage before the water is returned to the pond. Today there is even a more cost effective way to do this using a canister device containing a series of sieve plates to filter out extremely fine particles.

Consider these options as you look for ways to get that extra water clarity in you pond. It will make a real difference and greatly enhance the enjoyment you get from your fish.

One of the most vital investments for your Koi pond is a water filtration system. The Koi species is unusually perceptive of the quality of its water, and many fish have been known to lose the vibrancy of their colors if the water is not maintained under strict conditions. The most common pollutant found in Koi ponds is ammonia, which is present in Koi waste. Because Koi have no stomachs to hold food, anything that you give them will pass right through to the other end, so a proper diet is also helpful in maintaining a healthy living environment. For the rest, a Koi filter will do the job.

Since no one wants to clean their fish pond every day, a purifying filter is a necessity for almost all Koi owners. Keeping your fish healthy and beautiful means providing them with clean, nutritive water. Most owners will want biological filters, which utilize two bacteria in their cleaning process. The first is known as Nitrosomonas, which converts the toxic ammonia from Koi waste into the less toxic nitrites, and the second is Nitrobacter, which converts the nitrites then into nitrates, resulting in non-toxic, environmentally safe compounds. These types of Koi filters are especially useful in small ponds, with a small fish population. In larger or more populated ponds, biological filters tend to be less efficient, since larger amounts of sediment will require frequent cleaning in order for the Koi filter to work properly.

Image via Wikipedia

Owners of large Koi ponds are likely to find that a mechanical filter may be more useful to them. These tend to do a much better job of cleaning pests, insects, and algae, but a drain must be installed in the bottom of the pond to collect waste, which may lead to a more expensive installation.

Another useful item you may want to consider is a pump to create a flow of water in the pond to help gather sediment. Buying a pump is a good idea for several other reasons, such as dispersing nutrients and oxygen evenly throughout the water.

After your installation is complete it is very important to test the water for chemicals and wastes to know if your Koi filter is working properly. Testing the water is the only way to know the quality of your pond water, and it is a task that should be done weekly. Always remember that your Koi are much more sensitive to the quality of water than you are.

Now on to what I know you’re wondering: just how much money is all this going cost? Well, a filter for a 250 gallon Koi pond will usually range from $160-$200; a 1000 gallon Koi pond is $300-$400; and a 2000 gallon Koi pond filter typically goes for $500-$600. A water pump, if needed, costs $350, and the water testing kits can be bought for $7 at any pet store.

As a young Koi pond owner you may be overwhelmed with the amount of koi pond supplies essential to properly maintain your Koi fish pond. While the importance of the majority of these items cannot be denied, the feeling of being overwhelmed by the amount necessary should be disregarded. After knowing the function of each Koi pond supply you will understand why they are needful.

There are certain koi pond supplies that you need to have ready to be used. Because your pond is outdoors, emergency situations do occur. Weather is unpredictable sometimes and you do not want to be caught in a situation where an item is obligatory but they is no way to get it. Here are four Koi pond supplies you need:

Filters - Having a working filter is essential for removing unwanted pollutants, and maintaining proper humidify levels.
