We are already in Spring and some you might be thinking what will I need to do to clean up my koi fish pond from the mess Winter did?

During Winter all the pond life was in a stand-by phase so when the weathers becomes warmer the pond becomes alive again. The right time to begin your pond maintenance is just before the warm weather comes.

The initial Spring maintenance should include:

Turn off the power

Open the pump and clean it very very well

Clean the Filters

Remove the leaves your koi pond might have

Remove all the dirt using the net

With a high pressure water hose clean all the dirt installed on the rocks (if you have), on the waterfall or fountain

Remove all the leaves around the pond so that they don’t end up inside the pond

Turn on the power and

Enjoy your cleaned koi fish pond.

Autumn is here and the weather is already changing. Big and small storm is something that will start happening no matter we like them or not.

How can we prepare the Koi fish pond for small storms?

Being outdoor, the Koi pond is vulnerable to all the stuff that can be blown away by the wind. If you have garden furniture or other garden items that can fall into the pond put them indoors or in a place where they are protected from the wind.

Most people think that Koi will starve if we don’t feed them for a few weeks or even days. Well, a Koi pond has a lot of natural food sources and Koi will have a lot to eat for a long time. Also, not feeding the Koi makes the water less dirty and therefore even if the filtration systems gets damaged due to the storm, there won’t be extra dirt on the water as well as ammonia problems.

During a storm you have little time and opportunity to take care of the Koi fond, therefore, before a storm, make sure the pond water is clean and if you can renew most of the water. This measure will allow your Koi to have good water conditions throughout the storm. For ground level ponds, protecting the Koi pond with sand bags is a wise choice to prevent overflow of the pond water.

If you can, protect the Koi pond with a net to prevent leaves and flying debris to fall inside. Make sure the net is secure.

Winter will be arriving soon and you have to prepare your Koi fish pond that this season. Winter is the season when your Koi pond will be quiet and with only a few things happening. However, there are certain measures that should be taken to make sure the Koi pond and the Koi fish will survive throughout Winter.

Clean Up - Reserve one week to take care of your Koi fish pond. Clean it up and remove unwanted bulk material in and around your pond. Inside your pond, remove all leaves, dirt and other material from the bottom. Also, remove any plants or flowers that you know for sure that will not make it through the winter. Around the pond, clean up anything that the wind can blow into your pond, as you are not likely to notice this debris until the end of winter. Taking the time to make sure that as much debris is removed as possible will prevent potentially harmful bacteria and parasites in the future.

Stop Feeding – During Winter you must stop feeding your Koi fish. With temperatures hover around 55 to 60 degrees they should only be fed once a day, when the temperature drops below 50 degree for the first time, stop feeding completely.

Check Up – All your equipment should have a seasonal check. From filtration system to your store of preventable medications you should check if everything is in order once during winter it is more difficult to find products for your Koi and Koi fish pond.

Prepare For Cold Weather – When you search for a Koi fish pond heater always keep in mind your Koi pond size. If the heater is too small for the size of the pond you have, for sure ice will still form.

Turn Off All Water Sources – Waterfalls, streams and constant moving fountains should be turned off during Winter. They keep the water circulating and therefore it is more difficult to keep the water at the right temperature. The heater must work alone to keep the water at the right temperature to keep your Koi fish alive and the pond in great conditions.

A Koi fish pond produces a lot of organic debris and muck. Sum up with the stuff that falls in the water (leaves, insects, dust, etc.) we can say that a Koi pond can be very dirty. So, what can we do to keep good quality water?

Koi pond skimmers are the right solution to trap the rubbish on the surface before it sinks. If the filtration system is working properly and the water is returning from the filtration system to the pond then, at some stage, the surface debris will for certain pass through the mouth of the skimmer. In a rectangular Koi fish pond it is best to return water to one end and to skim the surface at the other.

Water overflows make ideal surface skimmers, if you want to add this as a feature to your pond. Bear in mind though that the pond water level then becomes important and needs to be maintained at a relatively consistent level or else your filtration system and flow rates will tend to vary somewhat.

A great idea for Koi pond skimmers is to have them built into the Koi pond right next to the settlement chamber. That way the skimmer will clean to surface of the pond water right into the settlement chamber, from where all the collected debris can be accumulated and filtered out of the pond system.

If you live in an area where the amount of leaves falling is very big you should use a conventional pool skimmer to remove the leaves. This way you don’t load the filter system and we keep our Koi fish pond with quality water.
