A very good filtration system in your koi fish pond is the most important thing to give your fishes a healthy and conducive environment.

You will invest a great amount of money for your koi pond. Koi fishes are expensive but they are worth the money. They also are very sensitive to the quality of the water that is why it is very important to have a quality pond filter to give them the best water quality. Removing the debris and other wastes and dirt from the fishes of your pond is the main function of the pond filters. They also remove debris from surrounding trees and plants.

Types of Koi Fish Pond Filters
The two basic kinds of pond filters are the mechanical and the biological types.

The mechanical koi pond filter is using gravity to remove and clean waste in the pond. The main purpose of this type of pond filter is to trap all of your pond’s debris and other wastes from surrounding trees. The filter is removed regularly for cleaning.

The biological koi pond filter on the other hand breaks down the debris into pieces using bacteria to lessen the ammonia released by waste and produce nitrates. Just take note that when the nitrates content of the water gets too high, this can induce risk for your Koi fish and putting another filter can make the water maintain its high quality.

Choosing your pond pump should be done first before choosing as to what pond filter is to be used. Without a pump the filter will be useless because the pump brings out water to make the filter catch all the debris from the pond. Pond filter is very important in the water circulation of the pond and the cleaning as well.

One more tip to take into consideration when choosing a pond filter for your koi fish pond is to make sure that the filter can make room for one-third of the volume of the water in the pond. Putting a small size filter will only put your koi fish in danger because of the unhealthy environment. You should measure the depth, height and width of your pond to identify as to what is the right pond filter fitted on its size.

One of the most vital investments for your Koi pond is a water filtration system. The Koi species is unusually perceptive of the quality of its water, and many fish have been known to lose the vibrancy of their colors if the water is not maintained under strict conditions. The most common pollutant found in Koi ponds is ammonia, which is present in Koi waste. Because Koi have no stomachs to hold food, anything that you give them will pass right through to the other end, so a proper diet is also helpful in maintaining a healthy living environment. For the rest, a Koi filter will do the job.

Since no one wants to clean their fish pond every day, a purifying filter is a necessity for almost all Koi owners. Keeping your fish healthy and beautiful means providing them with clean, nutritive water. Most owners will want biological filters, which utilize two bacteria in their cleaning process. The first is known as Nitrosomonas, which converts the toxic ammonia from Koi waste into the less toxic nitrites, and the second is Nitrobacter, which converts the nitrites then into nitrates, resulting in non-toxic, environmentally safe compounds. These types of Koi filters are especially useful in small ponds, with a small fish population. In larger or more populated ponds, biological filters tend to be less efficient, since larger amounts of sediment will require frequent cleaning in order for the Koi filter to work properly.

Image via Wikipedia

Owners of large Koi ponds are likely to find that a mechanical filter may be more useful to them. These tend to do a much better job of cleaning pests, insects, and algae, but a drain must be installed in the bottom of the pond to collect waste, which may lead to a more expensive installation.

Another useful item you may want to consider is a pump to create a flow of water in the pond to help gather sediment. Buying a pump is a good idea for several other reasons, such as dispersing nutrients and oxygen evenly throughout the water.

After your installation is complete it is very important to test the water for chemicals and wastes to know if your Koi filter is working properly. Testing the water is the only way to know the quality of your pond water, and it is a task that should be done weekly. Always remember that your Koi are much more sensitive to the quality of water than you are.

Now on to what I know you’re wondering: just how much money is all this going cost? Well, a filter for a 250 gallon Koi pond will usually range from $160-$200; a 1000 gallon Koi pond is $300-$400; and a 2000 gallon Koi pond filter typically goes for $500-$600. A water pump, if needed, costs $350, and the water testing kits can be bought for $7 at any pet store.

Automatic electronic koi pond feeder for outdoors use.

This feeder has its own internal feeding electronics timer that can be triggered by just about any type of external remote timing device. The supplied 12Vac INDOOR type power adapter (style may vary) can be used, or any programmable timing device with 9 to 24 volts ac or dc output can be used to trigger and power it such as a sprinkler timer or outdoors lights timer with 12 volts output.

If later needed, an outdoor approved power supply is also optionally available from Super Feed. A 12 volts battery can also be used with a programmable 12 vdc timer if normal power is not available, also optionally available from Super Feed.

The length of time the feeder feeds is totally independent of the length of time the remote programmable timer is on. Each Super Feeder also has a “volume” adjustment to compensate for the size of food.

On my previous post Koi pond supplies I mentioned some essential products and now I am going to tell two more:

Pond Salt and Baking Soda – Pond salt and baking soda are used to regulate kH and Nitrate levels in case you notice a discrepancy. Pay close attention to the amounts you are suppose to add to your pond, which depends on size and the problems you are currently having.

Bags – In order to transport your Koi fish you should have appropriate bags on hand. Do not try to transport your Koi in trash or regular plastic bags, once they are not designed for this, and may cause damage to your Koi fish. Make sure to get bags sizable enough to hold your Koi.

I will be posting more Koi fish pond supplies very soon.
