Winter is just around the corner and this is your first time to experience winter with a koi pond and you don’t have any idea on what to do. First of all, the winter season is like a down time for your koi pond since there isn’t much activity to happen during these period but be cautious since there are a few guidelines that you must remember before the winter season enters in order for both your fish and pond to survive the weather.

1. Cleaning – this is the initial step in making sure that your koi pond will not be damaged in any way during the winter season. Remove leaves and various materials inside the pond and remove the unnecessary materials surrounding the koi pond. Remove all the flower pots or plants around the pond especially the faunas that wouldn’t survive the season. It is also advisable that you remove and clean the leaves and other debris that can fly in your pond since you wouldn’t notice it until the end of the season. By doing thus, you lessen the chances of housing parasites and bacteria in the pond.

2. Feeding – this is an important reminder that you must remember. Do not over feed your koi and stop feeding completely especially if the temperature drops below 50 degrees. You can still feed your koi if the temperature is around 55 to 60 degrees but anything lower than that is potentially harmful for your fish. The reason behind this is that koi’s digest food in a span of 3-4 days, so if you mistakenly feed your koi during this time it will kill your fish. Do not be worried about your koi being hungry all winter since fishes doesn’t only eat the food you give them. Since your pond will consists of natural plant life, your koi can survive on that so do not be worried at all since your koi can sustain itself during the winter season.

3. Check Up – Before the season hits, remember to check on the filters and various materials on your pond. It is also wise to buy and store preventive medicines for your fish before the winter season since there will be a limitation to stores that sell these products. It is better to be prepared than be sorry. In addition to that, it is also advisable that one must have an updated emergency kit for your koi pond which will include medicines, water testing kits, nets, and bags.

4. Preparation – since you will be preparing for the winter, purchase a heater system for your pond but be sure to research carefully the appropriate size that will provide substantial heat to your pond because unless you do so, ice will still likely to form and that can kill your fishes. It is said that kois can survive temperatures as low as 39 degrees and there are instances that kois withstand the temperature even if it goes lower than 39 degrees but you don’t have to be complaisant about this fact. Purchase an emergency tank in case you need to move your koi inside the house.

5. Turn off water sources – some koi ponds have water decorations such as fountains and waterfalls, if your pond has this remember to turn it off during the winter. Why? Since you will be installing a heater in the pond, the constant motion of the water through the decorations will bring new water that will conflict with the heating system. Switch them off entirely during winter to make your heating system more effective.

High levels of nitrate in koi fish ponds will contribute to the growth of excessive algae causing a decrease of oxygen which will cause problems to your fish. High levels of nitrate can also cause your water to be with a strange color due to the algae.

Nitrates need to be controlled so that you have a clear water and healthy koi fish. This can be done manually and with the help of special solutions.

First of all use the test kit you have to test the nitrate levels. Make sure you follow the test instructions.

Verify if the koi pond filter you have is appropriate for your pond. Make use of activated carbon as a way to filter the water but make sure you replace it regularly to reduce the nitrates.

Now you need to fill around 10 percent of your pond with tapped or rain water. For instance, in case you have a 1,000 gallon pond you will need to fill it with 100 gallons of water. If you are using tap water make sure you wait at least 24 hours to dechlorinate.

With the help of a bucket, empty 10% of your koi fish pond. This water can be used to water your garden.

Fill back the water into the pond. Make sure you keep repeating the process once a week.

Get more koi fish pond plants. They naturally help in the removal of the nitrates that are in excessive number.

Do not overfeed your koi fish.

With this simple steps you will keep your nitrate in normal levels and the water will stay clear and your koi fish healthy.

Maintaining the cleanliness of a Koi fish pond is easy as long as you know the correct way of pond cleaning and maintenance. There are lots of guides around about proper Koi pond care and you can follow these guides in ensuring a clean and well-functional Koi fish pond. In getting started, here are some useful tips about the proper way of Koi pond care:

Set a regular schedule for pond cleaning. Partial pond cleaning can be done once or twice a month depending on the effectiveness of your pond’s filtration system. On the other hand, seasonal cleaning can be done once every three to six months and it involves total pond draining and floor scrubbing.

Consider using biological filtrating solution along with the installed filtration system in your pond. This solution made from active enzymes and bacteria will break down the waste materials present in the pond water to make the pond look clearer than before. The broken waste products will pass through the filtration system more easily, thus making the filtration system more effective as well.

According to most Koi Pond Care guides, it is best to clean your Koi garden’s equipments once a month. This is important especially for the equipments involved in the filtration system, so you can ensure that your pond is thoroughly cleaned and filtered every day.

Trim down pond plants, especially the reeds and rushes present in your pond. Pond plants are essential in maintaining balance within the pond but if left untrimmed, it can be a good place for predators that can possibly harm Koi fishes like bull frogs and snakes.

Each time you clean your Koi fish pond, it will be great if you will test the water in the pond. Just use a water test kit for this so you can check if there are safe and adequate levels of nitrites, nitrates, water pH and oxygen.

Once every one to two weeks, drain the pond down to ten percent and refill it with fresh water. Make sure to use a de-chlorinator after refilling the pond in order to remove the chlorine from the newly added fresh water.

Always check if the equipments present in your pond already need replacements. If you are using a UV light, it is advisable to replace the bulb every six months. On the other hand, filters need replacements depending on how durable your current filter is and how dirty your pond can be, so you must check the filters every two weeks.

Different kinds of algae come in many different colors and forms. They are primitive plants. Naturally a koi fish pond at your backyard will have some common kinds of algae. Do you know how these simple kinds of algae look like? The two basic kinds of common algae that exist in your backyard pond are plank tonic algae and filamentous algae.

Planktonic Algae: Those microscopic single-celled plants that are found at the surface of your pond are called Planktonic algae. It gives the pond its bluish green or brown color. This is what they call the “algae bloom”. It starts the food chain in the pond as it provides food to small animals and newly hatched fish fry. This kind of algae feeds on oxygen that causes fish kill and annoys pond owners if they grow out of control.

Filamentous Algae: These are single-celled plants that grow in the form of long threads or filaments and appear like a mat of hair on the surface of the koi pond.

The color of the koi fish benefits from the nutrients of Filamentous algae. It feeds on nitrates and wastes in the water in the pond. It is harmful for the koi fish and other pond plants if this kind of algae is permitted to grow beyond its acceptable population for it will cover the whole koi fish pond’s surface in no time. These algae grow best during the summer when sunlight is plenty.

Maintaining the water in your koi fish pond very clear is essential to keep the health of your koi fish, in addition to ensure it is simpler for you to watch your slippery friends.

Choose the correct dimensions filtering system for your pond. In case you are unskilled or uncertain, opt for the bigger filtering system.

Develop a structure to keep your pond shaded if it gets a lot of straight sunlight that may stimulate algae growth. Additionally, add foliage to help protect your pond, but be aware that koi will probably eat plants.

Control algae growth in your koi pond by adding barley straw to the water. Alternatively, use plant life to filter the water or add chemical substances to keep the water clear.

Include a ultra-violet sterilizer to your pond’s plumbing system for a low-routine maintenance solution to control if you have severe algae problems. An UV sterilizer eliminates the algae while it is pumped throughout the pond.

Analyze your pond frequently to ensure the water has a neutral pH. Ammonia from koi fish waste usually throws off the balance of the pond.

Remove some koi fish if your koi pond is overloaded. A buildup of ammonia in your water may affect the wellness of all your koi.

Check out your drains, plumbing system, filter and pump if you keep having problems. You may have a clog or a mechanical issue.

Springtime comes and you are obviously anxious to have your garden koi fish pond energized. It is that time of the year when the ice is at last vanished from the pond’s surface and usually the koi fish are wakening from hibernation.

Most garden pond stores are still closed. However, there is a lot to do in order to get your pond all set up for spring.

What you will need:

* two buckets
* one net
* anti-chlorine solution
* one smaller plastic container for bailing
* one medium filter

Carry out some landscaping work close to your water fountain.
Boost the season wakening by getting rid of any kind of dead foliage and dirt from the surroundings of the pond. Organize any ornamental rocks you might have near the pond and the adjacent space and prepare the area for brand new water plants.

The koi pond water during winter gets a sort of brownish color from the dropped foliage and filthy from the koi fish’s biological processes. Koi fish ponds cannot be appreciated if you cannot actually see the fish.

Remove the koi fish and put them inside a bucket filled up with the original pond water, after that begin bailing it out. As the water becomes shallow, you are going to need a smaller sized bailing container. If you’ve tiny rocks at the bottom of the koi pond, you should wash extensively in order to clear it up from any kind of disguised dirt.

Unexpected temperature changes may have a major impact so move those fish quickly and before doing anything else.

Fill up the pond again with clean water. In case you are using a garden hose/tap water, treat it with a suitable dose of chlorine removal solution.

Insert the bucket with the koi into the pond for about thirty minutes to let the temperature to match. After the floating time period, carefully put the water and the koi fish into the pond.

It is very important that a percentage of the original pond water be added in order to keep a certain number of the helpful bacteria assisting the biological processes that keep your koi pond working like a (semi)natural environment.

Aquatic plants commonly utilized in garden ponds tend to be tropical and several garden stores hold the old idea that pond’s season only lasts for 3 or 4 months. Even so, there’s a chance you’re capable of buying an “oxygenator” kind of plant like anarcharis at a nearby pet store. They help to oxygenate the water.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon have been hailed as one of the wonders of the ancient world. They were built by King Nebuchadnezzar more than 2,500 years ago for his Median wife who yearned for the forests and hills of her homeland. This 75-foot-high [22-m] stepped structure of arched vaults, all richly planted, contained enough soil to nurture large trees.

The homesick queen was likely comforted as she strolled through this terraced Eden-like area.

Landscape gardening was prominent in Egypt’s fertile Nile Valley. “Egypt,” says The Oxford Companion to Gardens, “is the source of the world’s oldest pictures of gardens and the location of an exceptionally long … tradition of gardening.” A landscape plan of a garden belonging to an Egyptian official at Thebes, dating from about 1400B.C.E., shows ponds, tree-lined avenues, and pavilions.

Next to royal gardens, temple gardens were the most luxuriant, with their groves, flowers, and herbs irrigated by canals from ponds and lakes teeming with waterfowl, fish, and lotus lilies.

Learning from History

With the many accounts of historical gardens, it could be observed that the people who created these wonders were able to preserve the said beauties successfully without the use of modern technology. Today, ponds are important elemental factors that contribute to the beauty of modern gardens.

It is through the use of natural pond care procedures that experts mostly suggest as to how these ponds are to be kept well by their caretakers. Like in the past, simply cleaning the area with traditional approaches of natural pond care is believed to be of a higher chance of preserving the gardens longer.

Natural pond care systems involve the use of natural touch. It has been proven through studies that the direct contact of human hands to the elements that make up a garden pond makes the area appear in considerable luster.

Certainly, unlike myths on pond care, natural pond care procedures involve the real essence of pond care approaches needed to keep a garden pond more beautiful than ever. Besides that natural pond care procedures could also be used to care for ponds that has living creatures in it like that of the koi pond care approach.

Tips To Build A Koi Pond

Starting a project to build a koi pond can be made much easier by following a few simple tips and tricks to make the project a success. The plan to build a koi pond should take a number of variables into account, such as the amount of room that you have to dedicate to the pond and the types of plants that you would like to place around the pond for dcor. Here are some simple tips to build a koi pond that will be attractive and easy to care for as well.

How to Choose the Materials

There are many different types of items that can be used to enhance the allure of your koi pond, but most individuals tend to stick to a few varieties of plants and add koi to the pond that are sturdy and easy to care for.

By sticking to plants and animals that are easy to care for when you build a koi pond, it reduces the amount of time needed to care for the pond and increases the pond’s chance of success. Individuals that choose items too difficult for them to take care of will quickly become frustrated and in time the plants and fish in the pond will die.

Another thing that you should take into consideration when you build a koi pond is the type of plants that they would like to place around the pond. Different plants have different needs and certain types of plants will not grow well if placed close to one another. Before you build a koi pond, it is important to research the plants that you would like to place around the koi pond and make sure that the area will meet the needs of the plants.

How to Choose the Location

It is important to choose the location of the koi pond carefully to obtain the maximum amount of enjoyment from the pond. Many people chose to build a koi pond that is close to the home because it will be close to where the items that are needed to care for the pond are stored and the beauty of the pond can be enjoyed from the patio or porch of the home.

The plants and flowers that used around the koi pond have the tendency to attract different species of birds, butterflies, and insects which can add an element of untouched nature to the area where the pond is located.

When you build a koi pond, the placement of the pond should be chosen very carefully. The pond should not be placed near trees or bushes that will drop leaves into the water, resulting in a constant need to clean the pond. When you build a koi pond, it should be placed in an area that receives a good amount of sunlight to allow the aquatic plants to grow properly. The koi pond should only be placed in a shaded area if it is nothing but fish and rock features, such as a waterfall.

In Kansas you may need a heater to keep the water above freezing. If your rebuilding the pond make it as deep as possible this will allow the fish to stay near the bottom where the water is warmer.

It is every Koi fish owner’s dream to have healthy Koi swimming in crystal clear water. But how to do that has always been a challenge. There are a few pieces of equipment that will help you in your quest for that elusive perfectly clear water.

The ozone unit is one piece of equipment that you could consider. Aquarium owners have used ozone for some time but it is relatively new to Koi ponds probably because they are very expensive. The ozone is created by passing air through a high voltage electrical discharge. This adds an extra atom to the oxygen. When this is detached it creates a very powerful disinfectant process.

Image via Wikipedia

The ozone itself can never be let into the pond. It is very harmful to the fish. But the water is fed through the ozone unit where it is treated before it is returned to the pond. Once treated it is free of bacteria and parasites and has improved clarity.

Another option for improving water quality and clarity is the UV clarifier. These units help to keep the water clear of single-celled algae that flourishes in sunlight and high levels of nitrates and phosphates. The UV clarifier radiates ultraviolet light causing the algae to collapse and decay. This unit is not a UV sterilizer that is commonly used in aquariums.

This unit is also different from the UV sterilizer that is often used in aquariums. The clarifier allows a higher volume of water to pass over the ultraviolet light. The sterilizer lets less water pass closer to the light for a higher dose.

You can add a variety of “water polishing” units to your filtration system to greatly improve the water quality. This has commonly been accomplished by passing the water through a sand filter as the last stage before the water is returned to the pond. Today there is even a more cost effective way to do this using a canister device containing a series of sieve plates to filter out extremely fine particles.

Consider these options as you look for ways to get that extra water clarity in you pond. It will make a real difference and greatly enhance the enjoyment you get from your fish.

We are already in Spring and some you might be thinking what will I need to do to clean up my koi fish pond from the mess Winter did?

During Winter all the pond life was in a stand-by phase so when the weathers becomes warmer the pond becomes alive again. The right time to begin your pond maintenance is just before the warm weather comes.

The initial Spring maintenance should include:

Turn off the power

Open the pump and clean it very very well

Clean the Filters

Remove the leaves your koi pond might have

Remove all the dirt using the net

With a high pressure water hose clean all the dirt installed on the rocks (if you have), on the waterfall or fountain

Remove all the leaves around the pond so that they don’t end up inside the pond

Turn on the power and

Enjoy your cleaned koi fish pond.

Autumn is here and the weather is already changing. Big and small storm is something that will start happening no matter we like them or not.

How can we prepare the Koi fish pond for small storms?

Being outdoor, the Koi pond is vulnerable to all the stuff that can be blown away by the wind. If you have garden furniture or other garden items that can fall into the pond put them indoors or in a place where they are protected from the wind.

Most people think that Koi will starve if we don’t feed them for a few weeks or even days. Well, a Koi pond has a lot of natural food sources and Koi will have a lot to eat for a long time. Also, not feeding the Koi makes the water less dirty and therefore even if the filtration systems gets damaged due to the storm, there won’t be extra dirt on the water as well as ammonia problems.

During a storm you have little time and opportunity to take care of the Koi fond, therefore, before a storm, make sure the pond water is clean and if you can renew most of the water. This measure will allow your Koi to have good water conditions throughout the storm. For ground level ponds, protecting the Koi pond with sand bags is a wise choice to prevent overflow of the pond water.

If you can, protect the Koi pond with a net to prevent leaves and flying debris to fall inside. Make sure the net is secure.

As you already know the number of Koi fish should be adjusted to the Koi fish pond size. But sooner or later your Koi will spawn and new Koi will be born, nature does it naturally and there is nothing we can do to prevent Koi new babies.

The solution will be doing a population control that means remove the baby Koi. Ask around your neighbors or friends if they are interested in adopting some of your baby Koi or talk to your pet store expert and see if they accept unwanted Koi fish or if they know an association where you can put your extra Koi babies.

If you aren’t able to give your Koi away, there is a method you can use. Stop feeding your Koi for at leas three weeks as soon as you realize your Koi are spawning. They will not starve because they will start eating natural food including the your Koi. This may sound cruel but it is nature having its natural course.

If you don’t eliminate the young Koi your pond will become overpopulation, your Koi will be uncomfortable and the water can get harmful
levels of gases and chemicals.

Winter will be arriving soon and you have to prepare your Koi fish pond that this season. Winter is the season when your Koi pond will be quiet and with only a few things happening. However, there are certain measures that should be taken to make sure the Koi pond and the Koi fish will survive throughout Winter.

Clean Up - Reserve one week to take care of your Koi fish pond. Clean it up and remove unwanted bulk material in and around your pond. Inside your pond, remove all leaves, dirt and other material from the bottom. Also, remove any plants or flowers that you know for sure that will not make it through the winter. Around the pond, clean up anything that the wind can blow into your pond, as you are not likely to notice this debris until the end of winter. Taking the time to make sure that as much debris is removed as possible will prevent potentially harmful bacteria and parasites in the future.

Stop Feeding – During Winter you must stop feeding your Koi fish. With temperatures hover around 55 to 60 degrees they should only be fed once a day, when the temperature drops below 50 degree for the first time, stop feeding completely.

Check Up – All your equipment should have a seasonal check. From filtration system to your store of preventable medications you should check if everything is in order once during winter it is more difficult to find products for your Koi and Koi fish pond.

Prepare For Cold Weather – When you search for a Koi fish pond heater always keep in mind your Koi pond size. If the heater is too small for the size of the pond you have, for sure ice will still form.

Turn Off All Water Sources – Waterfalls, streams and constant moving fountains should be turned off during Winter. They keep the water circulating and therefore it is more difficult to keep the water at the right temperature. The heater must work alone to keep the water at the right temperature to keep your Koi fish alive and the pond in great conditions.

Koi pond cleaning is number one priority. Keeping the Koi fish pond clean is the line between happy and healthy Koi fish and sick and dying Koi fish. You must remember that Koi fish pond water is where Koi fish eat and sleep but also a place they use as a bathroom, therefore Koi pond cleaning is a top priority.

If you don’t see the bottom of your Koi fish pond than the pond need to be cleaned. The water of a clean Koi pond must be completely clear without any floating dirt therefore it must be skimmed as much as possible.

Koi fish eat a lot of food and they also produce a large amount of waste not only from the digestion but also from the uneaten food that goes to the bottom of the Koi pond. It is important that you make sure that the filtration system is working properly, the water must be kept moving with a pump system and the floor should be vacuumed as much as possible.

Having an outdoor pond is very different from an indoor one. The outdoor Koi fish pond needs extra care because it’s easy for debris to get into the pond. The health of your Koi fish depends on the Koi pond cleaning so the Koi fish depend on you. Keep your Koi fish happy and healthy by keeping the Koi pond clean.
